Daily Lesson for July 7, 2021

Today's Daily Lesson comes from Luke chapter 24 verses 28 through 34:

28 As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. 29But they urged him strongly, saying, ‘Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.’ So he went in to stay with them. 30When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. 32They said to each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us* while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?’ 33That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. 34They were saying, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!’ 35Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

The disciples were still terrified and stunned. Traumatized by the events of the past week, they could not see a way out for the future. Jesus was there in their presence, but they did not recognize him. They were too traumatized to see any hope or future. Death had overwhelmed them, and they could not see life -- not even as the one who is the resurrection and the life was in their very midst.

But slowly the eyes were opened, and the heart was too. Something profound took place around the dinner table. Courage took form. Life began to find its way back into their lives again. Hope and resurrection were recognized. It was all made known to them through the study of the Scriptures and the breaking of the bread.

Gather friends, break bread, invite someone you don't know well to your home, read the Scriptures together. Be surprised by resurrection. Be surprised that it's already in your midst.
