Today’s Daily Lesson comes from Mark chapter 1 verses 29 through 31:
29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. 31He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up.
Except for this one little reference, read the Bible and we would have no clue any of the disciples were ever married.
We do know Jesus had many women followers, and that the women were very important in providing for him during his ministry. But really, we have no idea most of their names, and very little sense of how all they contributed.
But today’s lesson does tell us that women were indeed present, and that wives and perhaps children were present as also.
Peter had a mother-in-law.
This is a good reminder that much was left out of the Bible about Jesus (John 21 says that explicitly) and that the role of women, while not always recorded, was significant, if often unsung.
It’s also a good reason why clergy ought to be able to get married and raise families.
