Today's Daily Lesson comes from John chapter 4 verses 46 through 50:
46 Then he came again to Cana in Galilee where he had changed the water into wine. Now there was a royal official whose son lay ill in Capernaum. 47When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. 48Then Jesus said to him, ‘Unless you* see signs and wonders you will not believe.’ 49The official said to him, ‘Sir, come down before my little boy dies.’ 50Jesus said to him, ‘Go; your son will live.’ The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started on his way.
Last Sunday I told the story Frederick Buechner wrote about when he was deeply, deeply distressed over the well being of one of his young children. Almost overcome by the anxiety and fear of it all, he pulled his car over in his little Vermont town to collect his thoughts. Then he looked up to see that the license plate on the car in front of him read: T-R-U-S-T. Trust.
Later on he wrote about that experience, and not long after there was a knock at the door and a man standing there with an old, winter-weathered Vermont-green license plate. It turned out the car’s owner was a trust officer at the local bank. And now the plate sits on a shelf in Buechner’s bookcase, “rusty around the edges and a little battered” and “as holy a relic” as he’ll ever have.
“It was a chance thing,” Buechner said, “but also a moment of epiphany – revelation – telling me ‘trust your children, trust yourself, trust God, trust life . . .’”
When we are anxious and afraid -- especially anxious and afraid about someone we love -- let us remember to trust our lives and the lives of those whom we love with God, and to trust God with our lives. For there is nothing to fear in God; and God is in all things.
Rest in this, friends; and be at peace.
