Today's Daily Lesson comes from Zephaniah chapter 3 verses 11 through 13:
11 On that day you shall not be put to shame
because of all the deeds by which you have rebelled against me;
for then I will remove from your midst
your proudly exultant ones,
and you shall no longer be haughty
in my holy mountain.
12 For I will leave in the midst of you
a people humble and lowly.
They shall seek refuge in the name of the Lord—
13 the remnant of Israel;
they shall do no wrong
and utter no lies,
nor shall a deceitful tongue
be found in their mouths.
Then they will pasture and lie down,
and no one shall make them afraid.
As we continue in our readings of the Hebrew Bible and we come towards the end of the First Temple period, leading to time when Judah is invaded and carried off to Babylon, we can cite many reasons for the fall of the nation, but all in some way connected back to the simple explanation of hubris.
The prophet Zephaniah speaks of hubris's downfall, of the end of arrogance. The humble and the lowly will be left, but for the proud, and haughty, and disdainful, and deceitful it shall be the end.
For "Truth crushed to earth shall rise again."
And no one shall make the innocent afraid.
Hear our prayers, dear Lord. May your Scriptures come to pass. And may it be soon and very soon.
