Today’s Daily Lesson comes from Romans chapter 16 verses 25 through 27:
25 Now to God who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages 26but is now disclosed, and through the prophetic writings is made known to all the Gentiles, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith— 27to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory for ever! Amen.
A mystery in the Bible is a secret hidden with God, only to be disclosed in its due season. The secret can be hidden for years or even ages; yet eventually its revelation is made manifest. This is the moment when the purposes and providence of God are revealed.
To live in hope is to trust that God continues to work out God’s purposes in the world. This means much is unknown, much is unclear, and a great deal is absolutely mystifying.
Yet we hope and we trust and we live out our faith which teaches us that God is wise, God is provident, and God is working all things out for good — even now.
I went to see a Broadway show last week while in New York. In all scripts there is a denouement, when the curtain rises on the last act and all the strands of the plot all come together.
We live now in a time before the final denouement, in a time when the mystery is not yet revealed. The mystery awaits its own time and season. What remains for us in the meantime is to play our parts — trusting in the script given us, and trusting also in the providence of the playwright.
God is good. God is wise. And God will strengthen and sustain us until the mystery is revealed.
